Are you a parent of a child with Additional Learning Needs? Or are you someone who works with children or young people with ALN? There is constantly new information and research about the best practice and ways of supporting those with ALNs, and while this is a positive thing, it can also often be overwhelming. In this blog post we will cover some practical, simple ways of showing support to those with ALN, and we will cover what Cardiff & Vale Tutors can do to help.
ALN Overview
The first thing to remember is that though there are often similarities across ALNs, each person with ALN will have their own individual experience and will face different challenges. This means that there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to education or support. What works well for one child may not work for another, and often parents become experts in understanding what their own child needs to thrive.
For many families, one of the biggest challenges is not only supporting their child emotionally and academically, but also navigating systems that can feel complex and exhausting. Many parents describe having to “fight” to access the right support, whether that is appropriate school provision, exam adjustments, assessments or specialist services – for which there are often long waiting lists.
Key Adjustments
One of the most important things we can do for young people with ALN is to create environments where they feel safe, listened to, and supported. Small adjustments can make a huge difference. This might include:
At Cardiff & Vale Tutors, we understand that flexibility and understanding are essential when supporting learners with additional needs. We have many tutors that not only have extensive experience with supporting ALN students, but we also are compassionate and understanding.
What can Cardiff & Vale offer?
There are many alternatives to mainstream education, for example we provide ASDAN courses, and we are a Functional Skills provider. We offer Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 in Maths and English. Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE and allows entry to college, which can in turn allow access to further education. We offer a tutor to provide the course and offer online exams in Functional Skills, which can be taken online and at home.
In addition to this, we also can support families working with organisations such as IPSEA, who provide free legal advice and support, including guidance around tribunals and educational rights.
Sometimes, knowing where to turn for support can make all the difference. Families should never feel that they have to navigate these challenges alone.
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a way that works for them and within their own timeframe. Everyone is on their own journey, and not all routes to success will look the same.
If you have any questions, or need any support, we are here for you.
